OTHER SERVICES PROVIDED AT THE PARISH OR NEIGHBORHOOD
Sports
The Sports Program of Resurrection Ascension Parish provides young people with a healthy
form of recreation. It also affords them the opportunity to practice the Christian virtues of
fairness and respect toward others. Many of the sports offered to our young parishioners compete
with other teams in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). Currently, RA offers CYO Basketball,
Baseball, Softball, and Track (in collaboration with a cluster parish). A non-competitive swimming
program as well as a basketball clinic is also offered.
Parishioners can actively participate in this program through the following key volunteer roles:
1. Parish Athletic Representative (PAR). The PAR oversees and supervises all the teams sponsored
by the parish in partnership with the athletic directors of each sport. The PAR imparts the goals
and philosophy of the CYO to the teams under his/her jurisdiction and insures compliance with the
rules and regulations of the CYO. The PAR supervises the athletic directors and coaches and is
accountable to the Pastor. The PAR oversees administrative matters of eligibility and rosters to
insure compliance with CYO rules. Other functions of the Par include:
► the coordination of athletic programs registered with the CYO
► selecting athletic directors and coaches with the approval of the Pastor
► the signing and verification for accuracy of all CYO forms
► the designation of parish representatives for local area sports committees
► chairing regular Sports Council meeting for coordination of activities
2. Athletic Director (AD). The athletic director focuses on the details of a particular sport at
the parish level. The AD will oversee administrative details which insure a consistent and fair
interpretation of CYO rules. The AD coordinates with parent volunteers to handle various functions
such as registration, uniform ordering, setting up/closing the gym. Other functions include:
► participation in Sports Council meetings
► knowledge of the rules and regulations of the CYO
► assisting in the PAR in the selection of coaches
► assisting the PAR with administrative duties when needed
3. Coach. The coach should personify Catholic values that young people can relate to and use as a model.
The coach should possess the maturity to handle stressful situation sensitively, understand the needs
of the individual without losing the team concept and encourage the growth of each participant, both
as a player and a Christian. All head coaches must be at least 18 years of age and must adhere to the
rules of conduct described below. The coach must oversee administrative details which insure a consistent
and fair interpretation of CYO rules. Other functions include:
► knowledge of CYO rules, regulations and procedures
► knowledge of the rules of the sport being coached
► attending meetings as necessary
► attending coaches training programs conducted by the CYO
